A Simple Guide to Effective Time Management

July 23, 2020

We all have 24 hours a day but how we plan for them greatly affects if we get to accomplish our goals. Do you track your time or anything just goes? Coming from a person who never used to manage her time, time management is a game-changer! Effective time management habits increase productivity and frees up time. It blows my mind why school systems around the world never teach you any of this. Here is an easy to follow guide for beginners;

1. Plan your day the night before

Time management quote by conficius

Planning ahead is intentional. There are a few things you do on autopilot but for most, you will have to set a detailed plan out. I find that on the days I planned for the night before, I easily get stuff done. Also planning ahead allows your mind to work on your list all night long and many times you will come up with better ways of doing them.

2. Set goals the right way – effective time management

What are you chasing? Make a detailed plan about that. By setting smarter goals, you have a better chance of achieving what you would like or what you are chasing. Your goals should have specific time frames in which they should be accomplished for you to actualize them.

3. Spend your mornings on your priorities

Waking up early and spending the better part of your morning taking care of your priorities is the secret to a highly productive day. Accomplishing your priorities early in your day will give you an advantage over the rest of the day since it will all be smooth sailing. I like to start my day with self-care (meditation, ) so that I feel my best self when doing everything else.

4. Audit your time

If you want to have a better handle on your time, you should simply audit your time. Know when you are doing what and how much time you spend doing various activities in your day to plan for them better or cut down the amount of time they take. Keep in mind the Pareto Principle that states 80% of the results come from 20% of the effort.

5. Use a good time management system

There are several time management systems that can help you use your time better. First, you could use the Quadrant time management system, which involves dividing your tasks and priorities into four depending on urgency and importance. There are also apps such as Scoro and Trello which helps teams and organizations manage the time allocated to projects better. Read how to set S.M.A.R.T.E.R goals.
