Vintage Vibes – Step in Style with Nkatha K

November 19, 2021

Step in Style is all about sharing and celebrating stylish people. People with impeccable style, those who have mastered the art of being themselves. I believe styling is the most basic form of creation. The art of figuring out what you love, consistently embracing it and letting it evolve just as you do is nothing short of magic. Albert Einstein said, ‘creativity is intelligence having fun’ and I have to agree. This month I feature Maureen Nkatha. A stylish young lady who also runs a successful thrift shop, Kairetusapparel. Her style is a dash of vintage and street style. You will often see her in mum jeans, cargo pants, shorts and occasionally silk blouses. Her thrift pieces show she understands and loves her style and I love to see it. Learn more about her style below;

Introduce yourself

Maureen Nkatha, 25. Entrepreneur in the apparel industry and a food scientist by training.

Who is your style inspiration?

My style is inspired by different people, environments and moods. At the moment I’m loving Luanna Perez‘s style.

When did your interest in style develop?

I can’t quite tell the exact time/period but growing up around a stylish mum and a sister who was so into style magazines and clothes in general, It just rubbed on me but I feel I developed a specific interest in Highschool.

How would you describe your style?

I would describe my style as casual fashion with a mix of vintage and edgy vibes.

What is your most memorable stylish moment?

At my graduation. My friends and I recorded some clips of us walking in our fits, I felt very powerful in my suit and pair of heels, I bet the camera person could tell hehe.

Favourite outfit combo?

Mom jeans, boots/platforms a cropped T-shirt… this is my go-to on days I don’t have time to put together a well thought through outfit + it’s really comfortable.

Favourite item to style?

Jeans for sure I’m currently into flared and straight jeans.

You’re running late, what will you wear?

Shorts, baggy t-shirt and sneakers..the shorts have to be high waisted though😅

Advice to people trying to find their style

Don’t overthink it, go with the looks you’re most confident and comfortable in. It doesn’t have to make sense to others 😊 just own your style once you know what you feel most confident in.

Bonus

How did you start Kairetusapparel?

I started while I was in University, I was going through some unpleasant stuff so I got a part-time job in town to escape that school environment whenever I didn’t have classes. On my way back to school from my part-time job, I’d thrift a few pieces and sell them to my friends and coursemates. I also used to dress up in school and used to get a lot of questions like ‘where did you get that top from?’ which encouraged me to get more stuff in my style and sell.

What is the most memorable moment / proud moment you’ve had while running Kairetusapparel?

The day I launched my own designs (the cargo sets) and they sold out in a couple of minutes.

Advice to young entrepreneurs?

Be inspired but don’t get into a business field just because others are and once you decide on the field you want to be, be fearless enough to stand out and work on your business goals.

3 pieces of clothing you would live in forever and why?

Mom jeans, T-shirts and shorts because they are all so comfortable.

Your best clothing design so far?

I’m yet to launch my favourite pieces but so far We all love Kairetu’s cargos😌

What is your most expensive item in your closet?

The suit from my graduation.
